German Professional Ice Hockey Centre Signs with Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton, Alberta - August 5, 2021

The Edmonton Oilers have signed German professional ice hockey centre Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year, $68 million contract. The 25-year-old Draisaitl, who has spent his entire NHL career with the Oilers, is a two-time Art Ross Trophy winner and was named the NHL's Most Valuable Player in 2019-20.

Draisaitl has been one of the most productive players in the NHL over the past few seasons, scoring at least 100 points in each of the past two years. He is also a key member of the German national team and helped lead them to a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The Oilers are hoping that Draisaitl's signing will help them contend for their first Stanley Cup since 1990. The team has made the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, but they were eliminated in the second round both times.
